Let’s clear this up: it’s not a made-up word. Gorbea (or, Gorbeia in Euskera, the language of the Basque Country) is a real place. A mountain. And yeah – we named our brand after it.
Why?
Because Gorbea is the kind of mountain that doesn’t need to shout. It’s not the tallest. It’s not Insta-famous. But if you know it, you love it. And if you grew up anywhere near the Basque Country, you’ve probably climbed it more than once – in rain and wind, with your kids, or running it up as part of the Gorbeia Suzien Skyrace.
There’s a giant iron cross at the top. You can see it from the coast when the clouds lift. The trail is often muddy, the wind cuts across the ridge, and it doesn’t always give you the views you hoped for. But it stays with you.
To us, it represents what Gorbea (the brand) is all about: places that mean something. Not because they’re epic in size, but because they shape who you are.
Gorbea is also part myth. The mountain is said to be home to Mari, a powerful earth goddess in Basque folklore. She lives in a cave on the slope, controls the weather, and occasionally flies out during storms. We’re not saying we’ve seen her. But we’re also not saying we haven’t.
When we started thinking about this project – turning places into wearable stories – Gorbea was the obvious starting point. Not Everest. Not the Matterhorn. But the mountain that’s quietly been in the background of so many lives.
It’s where our name comes from. It’s one of the first designs we made. And it’s a reminder that meaning beats hype – every time.
So no, it’s not just a cool-sounding word. It’s Gure Mendia. Our mountain. And now, maybe, yours too.
